What if learning to float was about more than just doing a starfish?

Floating is one of those skills that can get rushed because it looks so simple. But getting a swimmer to understand body position, balance and buoyancy early can make learning to swim so much easier later.

Swim instructor flashcards for teaching floating

FYI!! There's more than one way to float!

I created these 20 Fun Float Flashcards to give teachers and parents a whole collection of playful float positions to explore, practise and build on. Instead of asking a beginner swimmer to “just float”, you can give them a fun pose to copy and suddenly you're working on body control without it feeling like hard work.

20 floats. So many ways to use them.

The printable, downloadable PDF gives you 20 illustrated float positions, each with simple instructions to help swimmers see exactly what their body needs to do.

💧  20 fun and creative float positions - including Bananas, Potatoes, Butterflies, Pancakes, Superman and more

💧 Visual instructions that make body position easier to understand

💧 Helps develop balance, buoyancy, stability and body awareness

💧 Introduces positions that support backstroke, breaststroke, freestyle, butterfly and survival strokes

💧 Great for preschool, beginner and big kid swimmers

💧 Particularly useful for visual learners and special needs/inclusive classes

💧 Print, cut, laminate and reuse in private or group lessons

And don't just use them for floating...

Once you've got the cards, you can get creative.

💦Play “Guess the Float” : one swimmer demonstrates while everyone else tries to work out which float they are.

💦Create float challenges : can they move from one position to another without losing their balance?

💦Build movement sequences : choose three, four or five cards and see if swimmers can move through the sequence.

💦Or simply let swimmers choose the float they want to try next.

💦The cards become a way of teaching body position, stability and control without doing the same old float every lesson.

Who are they for?

Swim teachers & instructors - add some creativity to lessons and give yourself more ways to teach floating.

Parents & swim mums/dads - practise body position and floating at home in a fun, simple way.

Special needs & inclusive swim programs - use clear visual cues to support swimmers who respond well to visual learning.

Swim schools & aquatic programs - a reusable teaching resource for developing those important early foundations.

The idea behind these flashcards.

I wanted to make floating something kids actually look forward to doing.

Because if we can get body position right early, swimmers don't have to spend their later lessons fighting against sinking legs and splayed arms that make swimming harder.

So yes, teach the starfish. But don't stop there.

Download the 20 Fun Float Flashcards, print and laminate them, take them poolside and see how many different ways your swimmers can float.

Make Floating Fun Again...Priceless!!
